TikTokers ‘regrets’ that the doctor looked at what might be in coffee grounds: ‘I’m scared to death’

A doctor on TikTok deserves the viewers after revealing that cockroaches usually occur in pre-ground coffee.

Dr. Karan Raj has more than 3 million followers who want to watch him unmask scientific and health myths and share some of his knowledge. Dr. Raj is a surgeon in London and also teaches at his alma mater, Imperial College London, as well as at Sunderland University.

His videos range from explaining how to avoid acid reflux to answering pressing questions like whether animals dream. But there is one TikTok in particular that some fans wish he had never posted.

In the viral cut, dr. Raj explains that pre-ground coffee – the kind you can find in most stores – can contain ground cockroaches.

“Just so you know … when you drink coffee, you also drink cockroaches,” reads the caption of his video.

“Certain percentages of coffee beans infect cockroaches and other insects and usually cannot be completely processed,” claims Dr. Raj.

He added that most food and health authorities do allow a certain percentage of “error rates” in food. According to fact-checking by Snopes, this is largely true, but it is unknown whether cases of cockroach spores have been recorded in ground coffee. Most examples, according to Snopes, are anecdotal.

Dr. Raj recommends that you do not drink pre-ground coffee if you are allergic to cockroaches – but otherwise it is not much more than a small source of protein.

“You tell me I’ve been drinking very scared all my life?” made an unbelievable TikToker comment.

“This is one of the things I regret,” another added.

Dr. Raj also had no more alleged fun facts in the comments section.

“Some people who work in the coffee processing industry often become allergic to cockroaches due to the constant handling of the beans,” he claimed.

“Thank you for just drinking tea,” one user replied.
