What is this real best way to crack an egg? On the counter? About a bowl? On your arm?
If you ask TikTok, the answer is much, much simpler.
A new egg-cracking hack goes viral in the app and divides users in the process. The trick, which claims to create a “perfect” crack in the eggshell, is to just drop it into the pan.
The method, of course, did not originate at TikTok, but it is now where it is spreading to home cooks around the world. The trend started with a user named @maddysumnerx and was subsequently repeated by TikTokers like Marcin Teodoru.
In the version of Teodoru’s hood, he holds his arm about a foot above his pan and then drops the egg straight. The egg hits the pan and tears open clean – then Teodoru easily removes the shell with his hand.
“It worked!” Teodoru explains in his caption of his video.
The thinking here is simple. Although tearing an egg is not the most time consuming task ever, it can be annoying and messy. If you crack it quickly – and in the same pan you use to cook the eggs – it can really streamline the process.
Still, TikTok users split the hack. Some called it ‘life-changing’ and agreed that it was the best way to crack an egg.
“Holy, it worked,” wrote one user.
“Is that obvious?” asks another.
Others, however, were more skeptical. Some commentators explained that they tried the hood several times and failed.
So, to get to the heart of the matter, the editors of In The Know decided to give it a try themselves. Fortunately, ITK video editor and full-time Try Guy Nick Rudzewick has some eggs ready in the fridge.
According to Nick, the hack works technically, but not every time. He said it took a few times before he could get it not right, but noted that if you hold the egg sideways (facing upright or upside down), it is more consistent.
