Tigers Hit Walk-Off Home Run, win 5-3 against Youngstown St.

BATON ROUGE, La. – Junior right hand Landon Marceaux kicked off a career-best ten outings Saturday night at no. 11 LSU lead to a 14-0 win over Nicholls at Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field.

Earlier Saturday, the Tigers defeated Youngstown State 5-3 on a two-run run-off homer by second baseman Cade Doughty.

LSU improved to 6-1 with the two wins, and the Tigers won five consecutive games. Youngstown State dropped to 1-6 and Nicholls fell to 2-3 with 2-3 losses.

LSU returns to action on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m., when the Tigers play host to Nicholls again at Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field.

“It was a long day today, but a good day,” said the LSU coach. Paul Mainieri. ‘We got a very emotional win in the first game, and you’re always worried about a disappointment after a game like that, but we came out like a gangbusters in the second game. Landon Marceaux set the tone and struck excellently all night, and we struck a few homers that put us ahead early against a pitcher we beat last year.

“With the prevailing wind, there was more of a hitters environment today, and we took advantage of that. I really like the way the center of our order is currently shaping up, (referee) Dylan Crews is an intimidating force at the top of the series, and our hits swing with a lot of confidence. ‘

Marceaux (1-0) worked six overs against the Colonels, allowing no runs on two hits without runs and ten goal kicks.

Nicholls starter Tyler Theriot (0-1) was charged with the loss as he surrendered six runs on six shots with three runs and three shots in 3.1 overs.

The exclusion was the first for LSU since a 2-0 win over South Alabama on April 3, 2019.

LSU blew four homers into the match, including two by junior shortstop Drew Bianco. Crews and third baseman Jordan Thompson also aimed at accelerating the Tigers’ 13-pointer, and center-back, Brody Drost collected three hits, including a double, one RBI and two runs scored.

DH Cade Beloso added a double and three RBI and catcher Alex Milazzo yielded a two-way colon.

LSU ended the ninth innings of Saturday’s first game 3-3 with Youngstown State. With one out, Crews was hit by a pitch, and to the first baseman Tre ‘Morgan flying out, Crews moved to third on a failed pick-off attempt by YSU reliever Gary Clift.

Doughty follows with a blast over the left field fence at a score of 2-2 to give the Tigers the win. It was LSU’s first runaway victory since a 4-3 win over Auburn in the SEC Tournament on May 23, 2019.

For the first time since 16 February 2019, LSU won a game with a descending homer against the Army Cade Beloso hit a game winner in the bottom of the ninth.

LSU lightens Alex Brady (1-0) scored the win as he tore down Youngstown State in first place from the ninth innings and scored two results. Clift (0-1) absorbed the loss after allowing the Doughty homer.
