Throw these brands away ground turkey, says Feds. 28 are ill in 12 states, including NJ

At least 28 people in 12 states – including New Jersey – have fallen ill after eating certain brands of ground turkey, federal pagan officials said.

Two of the 28 had to be hospitalized when they came down with salmonellosis, the U.S. Food Safety and Inspection Service said Monday.

Officials have issued a public health warning, but remember the meat may have been contaminated because the products are no longer available.

Anyone who has the following ground turkey by Plainville Brands in their freezers should throw it out:

  • 1 pound packages from Nature’s Promise Free from 94% lean | 6% fat ground turkey used by / freezing / sold by the date of 1 January, 3 January, 4 January, 8 January and 10 January on the front of the package.
  • 1 pound package Wegman 94% lean | 6% fat ground turkey used on / freeze / sale on dates of 3 January, 4 January, 8 January and 10 January on the front of the package.
  • 3 pound packages Wegman 94% lean | 6% fat ground turkey used on / freeze / sale on dates of 3 January, 4 January, 8 January and 10 January on the front of the package.
  • 1 lb. packages from Plainville Farms ground white turkey 93% | 7% fat with use on / freeze / sell by the date of 10 January on the front of the package.

The packages have the establishment number “P-244” within the US Department of Agriculture’s inspection mark. They were made on 18 and 29 December 2020 and sold around the country with around 211,406 pounds produced.

In addition to two people who fell ill in New Jersey, there were seven illnesses in Massachusetts and four in New York and Pennsylvania. Three people are sick in North Carolina, two in Virginia and one piece in Connecticut, New Hampshire, Maine, Indiana, Missouri and Arizona.

Salmonellosis usually causes diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever within six hours to six days after eating the infected product. The disease usually lasts 4 to 7 days. Most people recover without treatment.
