The shooting and the fire appear to be related to a “domestic incident”, Ashlan Benedict, chief of Washington police, told reporters.

The condition of the three-month-old, who was taken to a hospital, was not immediately clear.

According to Benedict, firefighters responded to an apartment on the third floor in the southeastern part of the city around 7:30 p.m. They found a woman who was shot outside the unit.

He said there were two more women with the baby, adding that he believes firefighters rescued the child and quickly extinguished the fire.

Two victims were pronounced dead at the scene, Benedict said. According to authorities, the fire was started when the attacker left the apartment.

No description of the suspect has been given, and potential links to the victims remain unclear, he said.
