Thousands of drivers cross highways despite closures

SAN ANTONIO Drivers across the state are advised to stay off the highways and city streets as slippery road conditions linger and threaten to deteriorate as night falls.

While some parts of the city seem deserted, others are just as busy as ever.

Officials say they want to keep highways and city streets reserved for first responders and essential travel.

The parking lot of the LaCantera shopping center was virtually empty on Tuesday, but nearby 1604 traffic and Interstate Highway 10 flowed near normal speeds on Tuesday.

Traffic was also seen flowing over Interstate 35 and other state roads in our area, which officials say is a problem.

‘It’s part of our winter weather operations that we’re doing right now. The crew is also on their way and preparing them for tonight, as we are directing all traffic to the freeway from the highway, ”said Jennifer Serold, a Texas Department of Transportation public information officer. We want to make sure the roads are treated tonight and ready for that rain. ”

While some local state roads appear safe and some entrances cannot be blocked, Serold said she wants to emphasize for an important reason that they are all closed to the public.

Unnecessary travel on city streets is discouraged. City transport officials make the following statement:

“The Department of Public Works continues to support the San Antonio Police Department, leading the emergency response to this unprecedented winter storm in San Antonio,” the city said in a statement to KSAT. ‘We are currently focusing on city bridges, highways and major intersections. The Department of Public Works also ensures that hospitals are accessible and that firefighters in San Antonio can leave their stations to respond to emergency calls. ”
