This remedy can save you from COVID death, the study finds

A common arthritis remedy can lower the mortality rate from severe COVID-19, says a new study. Researchers at Oxford University found that patients admitted with COVID-19 tocilizumab is less likely to die or should be placed in a ventilator, according to a study published on the prepress server medRXiv. (It has not yet been judged by peers.) Tocilizumab is an anti-inflammatory monoclonal antibody commonly used for rheumatoid arthritis. It blocks an inflammatory protein called IL-6, which can reduce pain and swelling from arthritis and other conditions that cause inflammation. According to researchers, Tocilizumab reduced the risk of death by COVID by 14%

“We think about half of the patients admitted would benefit from this calculation,” said Peter Horby, a professor of medicine at Oxford University. “We think it could happen almost immediately.”

The trial found that tocilizumab reduced the risk of death by 14% compared to patients receiving standard care. It also reduced the number of patients who had to be placed in a ventilator by 5%.

Most of the patients in the trial received tocilizumab, in addition to dexamethasone, a steroid that has been shown to benefit COVID patients in the hospital.

“Our data suggest that treatment with a combination of a systemic corticosteroid plus tocilizumab in COVID-19 patients who are hypoxic and have evidence of systemic inflammation would be expected to reduce the mortality rate by approximately one-third for patients receiving simple oxygen. “and receive almost one oxygen, half for those who receive invasive mechanical ventilation,” the researchers wrote.

‘Now we can reduce the risk of death by between a third and a half [compared to the beginning of the pandemic last spring], depending on exactly which patients are being treated, ”said Martin Landray, a professor at Oxford University.

COVID-19 appears to cause inflammation that can damage various organs in the body, including the lungs, blood vessels, brain, and kidneys. In severe cases, inflammation can lead to breathing problems and eventually organ failure due to lack of oxygen.
