TAMPA – Florida is expanding its suitability for coronavirus vaccination for people 50 years and older from today.
The move comes just a week after the state opened vaccinations for people aged 60 and over – after starting vaccination weeks ago with a minimum age of 65.
The expansion comes because many of the 3,000 doses allocated daily are not delivered to one of the major vaccination centers in Hillsborough County, the Tampa Greyhound track at Interstate 275 and Waters Avenue. Gov. Ron DeSantis said Friday that Florida has seen a “relatively modest” question over the past few days, reiterating that before May 1, vaccinations are likely to be extended to Floridians 16 and older.
It was not immediately clear whether lines would grow again with the expansion to 50-year-olds. Vehicles stopped at the greyhound track today at 05:00 to wait for the opening time of 07:00.
Here is a highlight of what you need to know if you are 50 years or older and want to get vaccinated. Click here for a complete guide to finding a coronavirus vaccine in Tampa Bay and Florida.
- Among the places where you can be vaccinated are Tampa Greyhound Track, where no appointment is required; Raymond James Stadium; by the Florida Department of Health in Hillsborough, Pinellas and Pasco counties; Tampa Family Health Centers and Pinellas Community Health Centers; and at retail stores such as Publix, CVS, Walgreens and Winn-Dixie.
- Some vaccination sites do not require appointments. But the organizers of those who did say it is important that you do not show up early as it will cause congestion and postpone appointments before you.
- Be prepared to wait at least 15 minutes for your shot so that you can monitor for any adverse reactions. And remember: Coronavirus vaccines are free for everyone, regardless of insurance status.
- Be sure to bring a photo ID, such as a Florida driver’s license, showing your name and date of birth. It is also important to provide proof of your appointment with the vaccine. It can be a printed copy or a screenshot of your confirmation.
- If you are eligible for a shot because of your service, you must bring something that confirms it, such as an employee ID card or pay stub. If you are seeking a vaccine because you are considered medically vulnerable, you must have a form of Florida signed by a doctor.
- From 22 March, the following groups must be eligible for vaccination at state-owned enterprises: healthcare workers with direct patient contact; residents of old age homes and long-term care facilities; sworn law enforcement officers, firefighters and K-12 school employees 50 years and older; people who are considered medically vulnerable and who have been signed by a doctor; and any Floridian who is at least 50.
