It’s all a bit confusing, and it’s all speculation, but Billboard is here to outline what fans think ‘driver’s license’ is about and why. Fasten, and see below.
Who is involved?
Rodrigo, 17, starred with 20-year-old Joshua Bassett at Disney +’s High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, and the two allegedly went out in real life.
What happened?
In August 2020, Bassett enjoyed lunch with 21-year-old Sabrina Carpenter, a singer who gained notoriety for her role as Maya on Disney Channel’s Girl meets the world. Sabrina’s sister, Sarah, was also present.
On Halloween 2020, Bassett and Carpenter dressed as Shark Boy and Lava Girl and made a TikTok about it, proving that they are at least friends and sparked rumors of couples (though it was never confirmed).
Lyrical references to the situation?
TikTok user Kaiya Olsen broke down the subtleties of ‘Drivers License’ after its release, first referring to the lyrics, “And you’re probably with that blonde girl / Which always made me doubt / She’s so much older than me / She’s all I’m unsure about. “
Sabrina is 21 (four years older than Rodrigo) and blonde.
In an earlier version of the song, which Rodrigo posted on Instagram in July 2020, the lyrics refer to a “brunette” girl. Fans began to speculate whether the change had anything to do with Bassett’s time with Carpenter.
Olsen then moved on to the opening text: “I got my driver’s license last week / Just like we always talked about it.”
In a social media video of LeBlanc Updates on YouTube, Rodrigo recalled practicing in Bassett’s car before obtaining her license, and the moment after the duo found out, the song they co-wrote ‘Just for a Moment ‘is used in High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. ‘We celebrated and went to In-N-Out, and I could not actually drive. I was 16, but I did not have my permit, ‘she said. “And so, he took me in his car, and we drove around the In-N-Out parking lot, and that was my first time driving.”
Finally, the choir’s heartbreaking line, “Guess You Didn’t Mean What You Wrote About Me in That Song,” had an internet connection looking for references to Rodrigo in Bassett’s songs that had been released earlier.
In July, Bassett released a sweet song called ‘Anybody Else’, with the lyrics’ How should I think of something else? / How should I keep it to myself? “I’m done as if I want anyone else.” Fans immediately thought of Rodrigo.
Again, nothing is confirmed about the 2021 love triangle, so we’ll have to wait to see if Rodrigo, Bassett or Carpenter say anything about the speculation.
