This Friday is a ‘Monster Hunter Holiday’ in one Japanese game studio

This is a great cultural moment in Japan when a new Monster Hunter game releases, especially if they were made for portable consoles. Monster Hunter: Rise is one of two to be released for the Nintendo Switch on Friday, March 26, and will come to a PC later in 2022. One VR / AR game developer in particular, called Mark-on, noticed that so many of his employees were planning a holiday for the game release that his CEO was just giving everyone a day off.

He commemorates this Friday as ‘Monster Hunter Holiday’, according to an interview with HuffPost Japan, although he explained that the holiday is for ‘non-executive’ employees only.

The series has built up a much larger worldwide audience since the release of Monster Hunter World, but it has long been popular in Japan on portable consoles, namely the PSP. My colleague Sam Byford, who is based in Japan, wrote in 2015 that ‘it was almost impossible to walk on a train carriage in Japan between 2008 and 2012 without seeing men, women and children through Sony’s small plastic handheld to get. Many have gone so far as to turn their fingers into a ‘claw’ to manipulate the awkward camera buttons. ”
