As COVID cases skyrocketed across the country last month, news emerged that a more contagious variant of COVID-19, originating in the UK, had moved to US soil. According to the English Prime Minister, it is estimated that it will be up to 70 percent more transmissible – not to mention deadly Boris Johnson—The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) has warned that the British tribe may quickly dominate the US by March. To help tame it, the UK National Statistics Office (ONS) is rushing to gather information on this particular variant – including how to spot it. A new ONS report analyzed the symptoms of a random sample of 6000 patients who tested positive for COVID in England between 15 November 2020 and 16 January 2021. The aim of the researchers was to identify which specific symptoms are more or less closely related. with the new variant compared to other cases of the virus. Eventually they found that one symptom stood out like that less common in cases of British strain: loss of taste and smell.
“People who tested positive, compatible with the new British variant, were more likely to report any symptoms and the classic symptoms, but were less likely to report loss of taste and smell,” their findings explain. “Loss of taste and loss of smell occur significantly less in a new variant.”
Odor loss was present in 15 per cent of cases in the UK compared to 18 per cent of the other cases. Taste loss was in 16 per cent of British cases, compared with 18 per cent of the other cases. Although the numbers are statistically significant, however, the presence or absence of these or any symptoms cannot definitively identify any strain at this time.
