According to Johns Hopkins University data, the U.S. reported an 11 percent drop in newly reported COVID cases over seven days, CNN reported. However, some experts warn that the numbers are more of a stabilization of the rising numbers than an actual decline, and warn that there is very little reason to celebrate. “These kinds of fluctuations are not sustainable on a statistical basis,” Amesh Adalja, MD, an infectious disease expert at Johns Hopkins University, told CNN. “The virus has established itself in the human population and is not going anywhere. We are going to see a lot of transmission until we exceed the threshold for herd immunity.”
And with many contagious new variants now spreading in the United States, it’s now more important than ever to keep the virus alive with everyday precautions such as wearing a mask, hand washing, taking social distances and avoiding crowds. “I will not wait,” Adalja told CNN. “Biologically speaking, nothing changes.”
