Employees in 20 states are on the verge of seeing a wage increase as the minimum wage rates will increase by Friday.
The bounce in wages comes as part of a previously planned effort to adjust for living expenses – or to rise to targets such as the $ 15 per hour minimum wage, CNN reports.
According to wage experts from Wolters Kluwer Legal & Regulatory US, Connecticut, Florida, Nevada, Oregon and Virginia, they will increase their minimum wage later in the year.
On Thursday, New York will raise its minimum wage by 70 cents to $ 12.50.
In California, employees working for a company with 26 or more employees will see their rate rise from $ 13 to $ 14 per hour.
In New Mexico, the minimum wage will rise from $ 9 per hour to $ 10.50.
In Minnesota, the minimum wage rises by 8 cents to $ 10.08.
According to Paycor, Georgia and Wyoming are the two states with the lowest minimum wage at $ 5.15. But as employers in those states are subject to the Fair Labor Standards Act, Georgia and Wyoming still have to pay the federal minimum wage of $ 7.25.
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the federal minimum wage went into effect on July 24, 2009.
The state with the highest minimum wage applicable to all companies is Washington at $ 13.69.
