There was for a moment the hero of Hades, not Zagreus

“When we tried to bring him to life as a protagonist, he ran the risk of being very generic.”

We all love Zagreus, right? Right ?!

He’s the protagonist you enjoy or do not mind playing, but for a moment there we almost had a more noisy hero. In conversation with The Verge, the developer Supergiant Games explains that Theseus, one of the game’s most controversial enemies, almost prevailed.

It would have handled that Theseus deepened in the labyrinth of Crete and built the hero myth while playing. The team notes: “So cerebral, he was interesting. But when we tried to bring him to life as a protagonist, he ran the risk of being very generic. But as soon as we started adding specific details to him, he just does not really feel like Theseus anymore. ‘

Here is the crux of the reason why the change was made. Amir Rao, co-founder of the studio, elaborates and says: ‘[Creative Director Greg Kasavin] had the idea that we could probably keep everything in play, but rewrite it as Zagreus again. These different ideas, all these different characters, all came together. I think within a day or two he convinced everyone that it was a better idea. ‘

I mean, to be genuine, Hades would probably have been fine with another main character. The interpersonal relationships could have been just as deep and the game could have been 100% the same, because Zagreus was like mechanical modeling clay for everything the developers wanted him to do.

It’s nice that it just turned out that way, but Supergiant probably had a hit on their hands anyway. And that Theseus’ idea is still fire. A sequel, perhaps?
