Theoretically, you can upgrade RAM and SSD on your M1 Mac mini, but you should not

It’s technically possible to upgrade the RAM and storage on an Apple M1 Mac mini – but there are several reasons why it’s a terrible idea.

The M1 is Apple’s first Apple Silicon chip for the Mac. While it has significant advantages in speed and performance, it is also less upgradeable by the user with integrated memory and storage.

Although the new Macs are less upgradeable, it is theoretically possible to swap some of the components on the chip. This is evidenced by Chinese maintenance engineers who have successfully expanded the RAM and SSD capacity on an Apple M1 chips.

The engineers reportedly completed the performance using a soldering station to install DRAM memory chips and NAND flash memory chips. While the process involved soldering the existing chips and adding the new components, it apparently did not require any firmware adjustments.

The exact details of the upgrade are scarce, but the translated Chinese text in the report mentions the clear success and claims that ‘the victory belongs to those who adapt’.

Just because some engineers get it right, of course, does not mean you have to try it at home.

First, it is almost impossible to purchase the DRAM and NAND chips you need for this procedure at the consumer level. You also have to pay for a soldering station. And it all assumes that you or someone you know has the skill to do it.

More importantly, any changes of this nature will invalidate your warranty immediately. It becomes more of a problem when you consider that the DRAM and NAND chips solder and solder, require a lot of skill, precision and patience.

Make mistakes here and you will end up with a dead Mac and no way to fix it. Therefore, we will pay attention to any form of adjustment like this, unless you are willing to waste your money.

Due to the speed and performance benefits of the M1, it is highly advisable to only upgrade the RAM and SSD space at the time of purchase. It’s an investment, and probably a wise investment.
