World Health Organization officials are holding a press conference on Monday on the coronavirus pandemic as more countries report cases of infectious new mutations of the virus.
The National Institute of Infectious Diseases in Japan said on Sunday that a new variant of the coronavirus was found in four passengers arriving from Brazil. The institute said that the new strain apparently has the same characteristics, such as increased infectivity, as other variations discovered in the United Kingdom and South Africa.
Meanwhile, the United States has found at least 63 cases of Covid-19 with the new, more contagious virus strain first identified in the UK, known as B.1.1.7, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Friday. The variant appears to no longer make patients sick or increase the risk of death, health officials said.
The data compiled by Johns Hopkins University infected more than 90.4 million people worldwide and killed at least 1.9 million people.
