The woman dies after the Pacific Coast Highway car flew into the waves

A vehicle flew off Pacific Coast Highway early Monday and landed upside down in the surf at Thornhill Broome Beach in Ventura County, killing the driver.

Rescuers from the Ventura County Fire Department responded to the call around 1:40 a.m. Monday.

Colliding waves initially obstructed rescuers’ access to the vehicle and required it to be pulled on the sand, Capt said. Robert Welsbie said.

The driver, a woman, was dead when rescuers reached her, Welsbie said.

The fire department and the U.S. Coast Guard sent helicopters to search the seas for anyone else who may have been in the car. According to Welsbie, about 25 rescuers from Ventura City and Oxnard Fire Department were used.

The Coast Guard, which also sent a boat from the Channel Islands harbor, stopped the search at 7am after it was determined that the woman was the only occupant in the vehicle.
