The 30-year-old Canadian singer has been making headlines in recent months for appearing in public with white bandages covering his face. Apparently he had bruises and scars were also visible around his eyes when he wore the bandages.

Fans were amazed by not only the costume choice, but also his facial changes in the music video for his hit, “Save Your Tears,” which changed his cheekbones, jaw and more.

This week, born Abel Makkonen Tesfaye in Toronto, The Weeknd, born before the upcoming Super Bowl halftime performance, revealed the meaning behind the costume, which all turned out to be prosthetics.

“The importance of the whole headband reflects the absurd culture of Hollywood celebrities and people who manipulate themselves for superficial reasons to please and be empowered,” he told Variety.

Furthermore, he said that the connections were part of a story he created for a character to go along with his album ‘After Hours’.

As he would appear on occasions with more connections and drastic visual changes, the look was meant to show a progression and we watch the story of The Character reach elevated levels of danger and absurdity as his story unfolds. ‘

It’s no secret that The Weeknd’s character in the “Save Your Tears” video looks rather strange – even unattractive.

“I assume you accept that attractiveness is not important to me, but a compelling story,” he explained.

Why he sometimes appears in character and other times not, the musician had a relatively simple answer.

“Why don’t you play with the character and the artist and let those lines blur and move around?” he said.

However, it seems that the lines may even blur for The Weeknd itself, because he said that he should ‘ask’ the character if he appears as the said character during the interview.
