The Weeknd get involved in the military conflict in Ethiopia – donate a million dollars, which will provide food for people who need it there.
The singer, who is himself of Ethiopian descent, has partnered with the World Food Program USA – a subsidiary of the UN World Food Program – to send more than a million dollars to aid in the North African country … which is through bloodshed and chaos for months.
Specifically, Abel’s money will provide the equivalent of 2 million meals for citizens there who are trapped in the middle of the feuding factions … many of whom have no more resources, such as food.
TW says: “My heart breaks for my people in Ethiopia, because innocent civilians ranging from small children to the elderly are being senselessly killed and entire villages are being displaced out of fear and destruction.” He continues to encourage others to donate as well.
If you have not heard, Ethiopia has been embroiled in a bitter battle with its own people since November – then Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed ordered an attack on the Tigray People’s Liberation Front – the ruling party in the northern part of the region.
The prime minister accused them of attacking a military base of the government and attempting to steal weapons and artillery. Remember, it all came to an end after tensions between the two groups had been going on for some time, and because the country was fully trying to transition to a democratic system of government. Safe to say … it’s complicated.
Meanwhile, the residents of Tigray have suffered terribly – many have fled the violence, and are even more hungry. That’s where Abel’s donation comes in – crazy props 👏🏽
