The Utah hiker slips, falls more than 100 feet – and survives

A man walked in the foothills just north of Salt Lake City on Sunday, survived after dipping more than 100 feet and stranded on a cliff edge for hours after losing his phone in the fall, authorities said.

The 29-year-old hiker was walking near the base of Ensign Peak, about a mile from the state Capitol, when he slipped, reports the NBC affiliate KSL.

“He stepped wrong, got too close to the edge and took a slide and tumbled halfway down the rock pit,” Salt Lake City chief operating officer Mark Bednarik said, according to the station.

The man, who was not identified, injured his pelvis and leg in the fall, said the department.

In the photos posted by the department, the hiker is on the verge of another steep descent.

He could not move and stayed there for five hours after losing his phone, the department said. KSL reported that a group of homeless people heard him shout and called 911.

The video showed rescue workers lowering the man into the rest of the cliff with ropes.
