The Truth About James Franco & Anne Hathaway’s 2011 Oscars Hosting Gig

Remember then James Franco and Anne Hathaway was the host of the 2011 Oscars?

Maybe not, because you may have voluntarily or involuntarily blocked this disastrous stage performance out of your mind. Producers had hoped that the actors would co-host a younger audience as co-hosts Hollywood’s most prestigious awards show. But viewers have strongly criticized their actions, especially due to the lack of chemistry of the stars.

“It was like a world’s most awkward blind date between the cool rocker and the adoring theater camp cheerleader,” David Wild, one of the four lead writers of the 2011 Oscars, told The Ringer in comments published on Wednesday, April 14, a week and a half before the Oscars in 2021 – which is not yet a host.

Wild recalled an awkward moment between the actors during the rehearsal, saying, ‘Again, this is a reminder, but [she] was like ‘Maybe you should try it’, and he was like, ‘Do not tell me how to be funny.’ Franco and Hathaway did not comment on his comments.

Wild said there was one moment that he thought Franco and Hathaway had finally broken the ice while looking at the footage of The disaster artist actor grinning at a person next to him.
