A team of fans managed to redesign the source code for both Grand Theft Auto III and Grand Theft Auto Vice City, make the files available for download.

This is good news! We recently saw what reverse-engineered games can mean for mud, with Mario 64 to be the greatest example, so that it can be “transferred” to the computer instead of via emulation.

Although this is not the main goal here – both GTA games are already available on a computer – with source code modders can also create new and interesting things. Like, use Mario 64 again as an example, add ray trace to the game.

That said, to gain access to the source code, make a transfer to other platforms easier, and the team has already run the code on Switch, Vita and Wii U, while also hoping to get it on PS2 and Xbox as well.

You can see the project here.
