Frogwares says it did not create the version of the Lovecraftian detective game currently available on Steam
Sinking City developer Frogwares said the version of its game currently on Steam was not made by Frogwares.
In a tweet Frogwares asks users not to buy the game.
“Frogwares does not have the version of [The Sinking City] offered for sale today [Steam]. We do not recommend purchasing this version. More news soon, “the statement read.
The studio has not published any additional updates at the time of this writing. We contacted both the developer and publisher, Nacon, for comment.
The Sinking City was shelved by Frogwares in August 2020 amid a legal dispute between the studio and Nacon, after it was alleged that Nacon – formerly Big Ben Interactive – violated several clauses of the license agreement for the game, and believes Frogwares owes € 1 million in payments.
It was sent back to digital platforms last month following a ruling in the Paris Court of Appeal that Frogwares was terminated [its] contract in a ‘manifestly illegal’ manner. “
In a statement last week that coincided with the release of The Sinking City on PlayStation 5, Frogwares said it was both the developer and publisher of the PS5 version, but the PS4 version had a separate publisher and different game IDs due to a constant stream of legal and technical situation, which prevents a platform upgrade for PS4 owners.
As it stands now, The Sinking City is currently on sale in the PlayStation Store, Xbox Store window, Nintendo eShop and various computer stores, including Steam.
