A man in England taking photos of Cornwall’s coastline is taking a photo of what was initially a ship floating through the clouds.
Photographer David Morris said he was “surprised and very surprised” by the optical illusion, but admitted he had seen something similar before, according to British ITV.
According to ITV, the ship appeared to be floating due to the similar color of the distant sky and sea.
“Superior mirrors occur due to the weather condition known as a temperature inversion, where cold air lies near the sea with warmer air above it,” said BBC meteorologist David Braine.
He said the mirage appeared due to ‘special atmospheric conditions that bend light’, adding that the phenomenon is common in the Arctic but sometimes occurs in the UK
THOUGHT OPTICAL ILLUSIONS
“Because cold air is denser than warm air, it bends light to the eyes of someone standing on the ground or on the shore, changing how a distant object appears,” he said.
Last week, another man in Scotland got a photo of a ship that looks like it is sailing through the air.
“Saw an optical illusion in Banff today,” Colin McCallum wrote in a viral Facebook post on his photo off the coast of Aberdeen in northern Scotland.
