The shadow craft concept that keeps superyachts free of Covid-19

(CNN) – For those lucky enough to own a superyacht, the prospect of escaping to open waters and staying in the lap of luxury is a reality throughout the pandemic.

Mogul David Geffen famously shared a message on social media suggesting that he set off in the Grenadines aboard his luxury yacht “Rising Sun”, while Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich’s megayacht Eclipse allegedly did about the same time has been observed in the Caribbean.

But jumping on a million-dollar vessel and embarking on such a chaotic time in the world on a long voyage does not come without the complications.

After checking the issue of frequently changing travel restrictions and border closures, there is also a small thing to ensure that your hunting Covid-19 stays free, especially if you are uploading new staff and / or guests.

Australian marine design company Incat Crowther and the design of the catamaran yacht support ShadowCAT have an ingenious way of finding this obstacle. (Support or shadow vessels are smaller ships used to transport crew, equipment, and supplies.)

The team, which previously devised Hodor, the world’s largest shadow vessel, recently unveiled a new concept that is a buffer between the main yacht and the outside world. ‘

Described as a ‘protective layer’, ShadowCAT Haven serves as a floating Covid-19 testing facility and a quarantine area that allows owners, or tenants in some cases, ‘to keep Covid-safe social bubbles on board. ‘

The multi-hull vessel is 68.2 meters in size and can accommodate 52 people and is equipped with a hospital and a laboratory, as well as thermal cameras designed to detect any signs of infection.

Haven, which has a catamaran configuration, must be equipped with air conditioning and circulation systems combined with ‘nanotechnological surfaces’ that destroy bacteria and viruses.

As soon as guests or staff arrive on board, they are brought to the “shore zone” of the vessel and tested for infection. Those who test positive are kept in quarantine.

Passengers who get everything clear are moved to the “yacht side”, which is equipped with jet skis, a submarine and a diving center, while they wait to enter the ‘mothership’.

“All new crew and guests must drive through Haven to test before boarding,” reads a statement from Incat Crowther.

“As a result, the mothership will have no direct contact with the shore. All stores and transfers will be handled in full by Haven.”

The very modern concept comes at a time when the demand for large yachts seems to be.

Despite the global pandemic, a total of 341 were sold by 2020, according to the super-hunting intelligence source BOAT Pro.

Although this indicates a slight decrease in the market compared to the 404 sold in 2019, sales started to increase at the end of the year.

“I think what happened was that the world was fed up with being locked up and said they could not go anywhere,” he told the British Daily Telegraph.

‘So I guess people with the money’ now have a good time buying a boat because it’s my own, safe environment. ‘

“You’re going from your house to your private plane to your boat – the perfect Covid arrangement.”

For those opting for a Haven, they will be at least one more step in the arrangement, even if it is very expensive.
