The Sopranos prequel The Many Saints Of Newark has been pushed back to a new premiere on September 24 from March 12.

The prequel, written by creators David Chase and Lawrence Konner, is released by Warner Bros. and produced by New Line Cinemas.

The film will debut simultaneously in cinemas and on HBO Max amid changes in the theater industry with major closures and uncertainty amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The principle photography of the film started in April 2019 and the film was packaged before the end of March 2020 amid the spread of the virus.

A few scenes in the film were re-recorded last September, and sources told Variety that the postponement is such that the film will do better for the awards season with a debut on the festival circuit this fall.

The cast includes Ray Liotta, Alessandro Nivola, Jon Bernthal, Vera Farmiga, Cory Stoll and Billy Magnussen; Michael Gandolfini, the son of the star of the TV series James Gandolfini, who died in 2013 at 51, will play the latest incarnation of his father’s character, Tony Soprano.

The film, which will also examine the tensions that exist between African-American and Italian people living in the titular community of New Jersey amid the unrest of the 1967 Newark riots, which killed 26 people and injured hundreds .

The Sopranos series features numerous flashbacks from the 1960s, with Joseph Siravo as Tony Soprano’s father Johnny Boy, Laila Robins as a younger incarnation of Tony’s mother Livia Soprano, and Rocco Sisto as the younger Junior Soprano.

The film will also focus on Dickie Moltisanti (Nivola), the show’s father Christopher Moltisanti (played by Michael Imperioli) and Tony’s mentor.

The series, which famously ended on a cliffhanger, debuted in January 1999 until May 2007. The program and its stars have piled up Emmy Awards during their careers and are considered a fiery hotspot in the TV genre.

Amid the delay, fans of Sopranos can still get their fill on the podcast Talking Sopranos, presented by showalums Imperioli and Steve Schirripa.
