During a flow earlier this month, Doom Eternal director Hugo Martin was asked if the team had ever considered developing a female Doom Slayer for the game. His answer was surprisingly thorough.

“I was actually thinking about it,” Martin told Bethesda community manager Joshua Boyle. ‘I think if we do, I want it to be deadly. I think it’s interesting how it kills the glory, the kind of weapons she would have, the fighting style. All aggression, absolutely, but a different kind of aggression. I will really strive to influence the game in a meaningful way. I definitely thought about it a lot. ”

The people behind 2016s Doem and 2020s Doom Eternal referred to their main character as a Ferrari, in that game as the Doom Slayer is fun at any speed. Martin said they want to find similar references for any character they develop, including a hypothetical female Doom Slayer.

“How would that affect things?” Martin added. ‘What kind of analogies can you draw from it and allow it to influence the experience? That would definitely be cool. ”

The identity of Doem‘s protagonist – formerly known as Doomguy before being reinvented as the Doom Slayer along with the modern, story-driven reload – never had much of an impact on first-person performance. He is merely a vessel for the player’s own desire to destroy a bunch of demons as cruelly as possible. The fact that Martin was seriously thinking about developing a female counterpart is quite neat, and it should be interesting to see if these ideas move in the future Doem projects.
