The nominee for health and human services minister Xavier Becerra has tried to get the Biden government’s message on the coronavirus pandemic ready after President Biden offered a fatalistic outlook for the immediate future.
At a Friday news conference, Biden said: “there is nothing we can do to change the trajectory of the pandemic in the next few months.” On Sunday, Becerra indicated that the government does have a plan, but that it will not have immediate results.

“I believe President Biden has made it very clear that the plane is in a nose dive, and we need to get on it. And you are not going to do that overnight,” Becerra told Dana Bash, host of Dana Bash, on CNN said. “But we’re going to pull it up, we have to pull it up. Failure is not an option here, and we will do it too.”
Becerra further said that Biden’s plan is “a rescue plan that must be followed by a recovery plan”. He said the government should first “save the people” and the economy.

Asked if this means he believes the government can change the course of the pandemic, Becerra reiterated that it would not happen “overnight”, but said progress was possible if people worked together.

Becerra then claimed that the simple act of everyone wearing face masks would be enough to make an impact.
“If we get people who follow the president’s guidance to wear a mask for the first 100 days, we’re going to get control of this thing,” he said.
