The new Jets scheme makes linebacker a priority

As part of The Post’s 2021 draft preview by The Post, we’re exploring what the Jets can do at each position. Wednesday: Linebacker.

Linebacker is a big need for the Jets. The position has not received the attention that the offensive line or cornerback has this season, but because Robert Saleh switched the Jets from a 4-3 team to a 4-3, they are basically starting at linebacker again.

CJ Mosley is expected to return after being ruled out last season. The Jets discussed him, but it’s hard to imagine anyone going to sign his heavy contract. The team also signed for Jarrad Davis in a free agency to fill one of the lineout positions. It still leaves one starting point and depth needed.

Notre Dame’s Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah would be a good fit in Saleh’s defense, but there is a chance he will not be at number 23 on the board. to choose a first round. Tulsa’s Zaven Collins is another consideration at 23 or in the second round at no. 34.

On the second day of the draft, players like LSU’s Jabril Cox and Baron Browning of Ohio State are possibilities. Joe Douglas, Jets, could also try to add linebackers late in the draft as development players and immediate contributors to special teams.
