The Muppet Great Gatsby is a text-length script that can get closer to it

Our desperate plea for a Muppets processing of The Great Gatsby was answered: documentary filmmaker Ben Crew took the novel from the public domain and turned it into a downloadable 104-page script that marries Muppet Maneuvers with Existential Anxiety. My request for an adjustment may have been ridiculous, but this text seriously confirms me.

Crew’s screenplay, “Muppets Present ‘The Great Gatsby,’ ‘may be a silly mashup of a novel you’re forced to read in high school and a variety program for puppets, but he said it’s a meaningful project. became when the January news cycle began. too much to carry. “I knew there was nothing I could do in DC, and that if I did not distract myself, I was just going to mess up before the news,” Crew wrote in an email. The edge. “That’s when I decided to write this screenplay.”

The final product is a screenplay that plays many of the strengths of the Muppets, while throwing in some fun additions to Crew. Miss Piggy does karate, Gonzo and Fozzie Bear regularly break the fourth wall, and Kermit … well, Kermit is just as accurate as we expect. Since every good Muppets movie needs human characters, Crew can imagine him having to play Tom Holland as narrator Nick Carraway and Taron Egerton as the abusive Tom Buchanan. The screenplay also regularly leans in the metahumor The Muppets are known for and of course contain many musical numbers.

Crew used his knowledge of The Muppets to write the screenplay, which he says has been built over the years, with his older brother over VHS tapes of The Muppet Show. The personal connection and the belief that there is something truly, morally good about the characters made the screenplay feel like an antidote to the anxiety that crew members had. And based on the positive reactions to his Reddit message that the screenplay shared, it also helped others. You can read an excerpt from the full script below:

NICK CARRAWAY (CONTINUED)

I wonder what kind of man Mr. Gatsby is.

GONZO

Technically, he is a frog.

Nick’s eyes looked at the large windows of Gatsby’s house. A one-time curtain is drawn open, can anyone watch?

NICK CARRAWAY (VO)

All this money, all this property – but are you there alone now, do you have anyone to share it with?

RIZZO

He is again inwardly monologues.

GONZO

Just unpack, we’ll snap him out if he’s still going to dinner.

The wheels are therefore in motion. A text was written, a poster made and a new subreddit (r / muppetgreatgatsby) dedicated to the project. Disney can step in and make things official at some point, but we’ve achieved quite a lot of willpower and ridiculous demands alone, so let’s set one more thing: we need to make this screenplay into a movie.
