Rumors have swirled over the past few months that Tesla would soon be offering a single-engine Standard Range version of the Model Y to go along with its SR + Model 3 sedan. Elon Musk seems to be cooling off from the idea, but last week the company pulled the trigger on the Model Y Standard Range, which will sell for $ 41,990- $ 8,000 less than the twin-engine Model Y Long Range, which is the primary choice of the most buyers were. until now.

The first question everyone will ask is what is the difference in scope? The answer is many. The Model Y Long Range is rated at 326 miles. The standard series? 244 miles. This is a difference of 82 miles, which is significant. It deals, for example, with the entire range of a first-generation Nissan LEAF. It will be interesting to see how many people order the Standard Range and how many order the Long Range, now that there is a choice. One of us CleanTechnica crew has already made his choice.

The SR and LR have the same top speed – 135 mph – but the LR speeds up to 60 mph by half a second – 4.8 seconds versus 5.3 seconds. Other than that, the cars are virtually identical. Less range, less money. More variety, more money. Choose whichever option suits your wallet and your lifestyle and drive happily.

Whichever version you choose, it’s also available for the first time as a seven-passenger vehicle for an additional $ 3000. Now we’ll see if full-size adults will be able to sit on it. Some people doubt.

Last July, Musk indicated that a Standard Range version of the Model Y simply could not travel far enough at a single charge to be acceptable. Apparently something had changed his mind. Perhaps the question was simply too strong to ignore. After all, the first rule of marketing is to give customers what they want.

There is a good chance that Model Y SR could become Tesla’s best-selling car. We know at least one person who wants one. How many more will there be? “We’ll see,” said the Zen Master.
