The Morning After: Sonos’ new $ 169 speaker is the smallest ever

If you want a portable speaker, Sonos is looking for someone who does not own one yet. At $ 169, the Roam is more expensive than many portable Bluetooth speakers, but it’s also the cheapest Sonos speaker ever.

Unlike the Move (Sonos’ previous movable, if not all – portable speaker), the Roam has a smaller, narrower design and weighs just one pound. The battery should play for ten hours, and it automatically goes into a low-power sleep mode when not in use. There is also dust and water protection, and you can connect two speakers for portable stereo sound. You can even connect the new speaker to existing Sonos devices in your home and round off your audio system.

Sonos Roam Speaker

Sonos

The company is tacitly aware that the portable Bluetooth speaker market is incredibly large – which is why the Sonos features are important if it wants to convince many of us to upgrade from our current beach tour speaker. However, the Roam’s versatility is compelling. Let’s see what it sounds like.

Pre-orders for the Roam are now open and the speaker is available on April 20th.

Google

Google’s own operating system, Chrome OS, gets a bunch of features and new styling to celebrate a decade in existence. This is a good time to strike: Chromebooks have never been so popular. Phone Hub may be the most useful update. It’s a small dashboard that has access to your phone’s dashboards so you can see the status of things like battery life and data connectivity. You can ring your Android device if you have placed it incorrectly, and can also activate remote tethering with one click. We unravel all the new features here. Read on.

Evil

Evil is highly regarded for its amazing headphones. The company’s latest buttons have an ‘open’ design that sits outside your ear. Not only does this increase comfort, but it also means you can hear what’s going on at all times – an important safety feature for runners. Bose has decided to allow itself to be aware of everything around you, and according to news editor Billy Steele, who rated the Bose Sport Earplugs, this means accepting sacrifices for sound quality. Cheaper, but …

Samsung has finally introduced a 980 SSD that is not part of the expensive Pro line, and this is mostly good news for performance-oriented computer users – with a caveat. If you hit read speeds up to 3,500MB / s and write faster (up to 3000MB / s versus 2500MB / s) than the 970 Evo it replaces, Samsung says it also has 36 percent lower power consumption, 54 percent greater power efficiency and improved cooling, which reduces overheating must occur. However, Samsung is also dropping built-in DRAM on the Plains 980, joining the ranks of cheaper SSDs. This is partly promisingly “identical” to faster DRAM-equipped chips, in part by using Host Memory Buffer technology to directly access the system’s RAM, but it’s clearly an advantage in pricing keep.

Those prices are thankfully low. The 980 starts at $ 50 for a 250 GB model, $ 70 for 500 GB and $ 130 for 1 TB. Read on.

Nothing

We only know a few things about Nothing, a new hardware startup by OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei. One thing we do know is that its first product is wireless earbuds, which we assume it informs above. The transparent casing on what appears to be a concept of wireless earbuds is a nod to making technological devices less conspicuous. The shape is apparently inspired by “a grandmother’s tobacco pipe”, which is at least different from the truncated q-tip look that embodies the most popular wireless earbuds to date. Nothing’s first products will be launched this summer. Read on.

The company promises to share something “fantastic”.

Two months ago, Samsung held an Unpacked event to announce the Galaxy S21, but the company is already sending out invitations for another event it plans to hold on March 17 at 10am. Read on.
