Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said Sunday the latest outbreak of the coronavirus in Los Angeles County infects a new person every six seconds. And it’s accelerating exactly where people are least likely to be on their guard: private.
Mr Garcetti said on the CBS program ‘Face the Nation’ that despite what California has done to curb virus transmission in public, including a major compliance with mask wear and strict restrictions on businesses, a large number of new cases are still being detected , including a recent average of 14,000 per day in the country.
“This is something that is now spreading in the house,” he said. Garcetti said, adding: ‘This is a message for the whole of America: we may not all have the same density as LA, but what is happening in LA can and will be coming in many communities in America. ”
There are more than twice as many Covid-19 patients in hospitals in California as a month ago, and many intensive care units in the state are overflowing. At least four people in the state have been found to be infected with the new, more transmissible variant of the virus first identified in Britain.
And at the rate that immunization is going so far, the new vaccines offer little hope of getting into the boom quickly, the mayor said. “We are currently at a pace of delivering vaccinations over five years in LA, instead of more than half a year,” he said.
Mr Garcetti criticized the Trump administration for not planning ahead by training more medical staff to administer the vaccine, and for leaving state and local governments to carry out a major vaccination campaign without provide the necessary resources to carry it out.
“The federal government cannot tell local governments and state governments to do something and not help us,” he said.
