The Masked Singer Season 5 Premiere Reveals the Snail’s Identity

DESTROYER WARNING: Do not read ahead if you have not watched the premiere of season 5 of “The Masked Singer,” which aired on March 10 on Fox.

It’s not easy to see: Kermit the Frog was the first celebrity to be unveiled on season 5 of ‘The Masked Season’ when the hit Fox series returned on Wednesday night.

You read that right. “The Masked Singer” producers considered this season a ‘game changer’, and the things that kicked off with a Muppet definitely fit that.

Kermit wore the Snail costume and sang ‘You Make My Dreams (Come True)’ by Hall and Oates. The Muppet was not available for interview, but he emailed Variety about his motivations for joining the program: ‘After years of being your average everyday frog, I thought it would be nice to be someone else,’ he said. “The chance to become a snail – with my own built-in garage” was too good to pass up … I did not stay on the show for very long. But I loved every minute of it. ”

Robin Thicke thought it was Seth MacFarlane, Ken Jeong named Jay Leno, Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg guessed it was Ted Cruz and Nicole Scherzinger thought it was Billy Crystal.

It’s a shame McCarthy Wahlberg did not go along with her gut, as she even jokes after the Snail’s actions that ‘he emits Kermit the Frog sound.’

Of course, Kermit has been voiced full-time by Matt Vogel since 2017, meaning he would probably control and vote Kermit in the snail.

“We decided to structure the costume around a battery-powered mobile van device and controlled by the celebrities hidden in it,” said executive producer Craig Plestis. “Our biggest fear given the limited visibility was that we would ride celebrity off the stage, but luckily that didn’t happen.”

The idea for the snail comes from the producers’ desire to come up with a costume that “was a complete surprise”, Plestis said. ‘In other words, you could not see from the costume whether the famous man or woman was, long or short, big or small, whatever. So we gave the idea to our Emmy-winning costume designer, Marina Toybina, and she ran with it. ‘

Kermit was ready to sing ‘I am a believer’ for his second number when he returned. “The Masked Singer” begins season 5 with 16 contestants, and a host: Niecy Nash, who acts as a regular host for Nick Cannon. As first reported by Variety, Cannon could not return for the first few episodes of this season due to a COVID-19 diagnosis. (However, Cannon was still heard at the beginning of the program as a voice announcer.)

Participants in “wildcard” will also be new to the competition this season and they will take part in the battle for the gold mask trophy. Participants in the season 5 glamorous staff will be divided into two groups of five (A and B), but then all the new masked celebrities will jump into the “wildcard” round and also compete. In addition, the show added a new character, a rooster named ‘Cluedle-Doo’, who promises to add a bit of mischief to the proceedings and share additional clues to the viewers.

“The Masked Singer” continues without an actual studio audience, but rather reactions from previous seasons. Home voting also remains via a network of “Masked Singer” superfans, who watched the episodes while they were recorded via a closed circuit.

This season’s costumes include Raccoon, Seashell, Black Swan, Snail, Grandpa Monster, Phoenix, Chameleon, Russian Doll (s), Porcupine, The Piglet and the Wildcards.

The season 5 contestants boast a combined 26 Grammy nominations, nine multi-platinum singles, four Oscars, three Super Bowl appearances, six gold medals and two world records.

The panelists of the program also once competed for a “Golden Ear” trophy, based on their first impressions of each masked artist (who McCarthy last won) – For the snail was Thicke Seth MacFarlane; Jeong named Jay Leno; McCarthy Wahlberg and Scherzinger went with Adam Corolla. None of them have a point.
