The Masked Singer Season 5 Episode 6 Reveals Orca Identity

DESTROYER WARNING: Do not read ahead if you have not watched Season 5 Episode 6 of “The Masked Singer”, which aired on April 14 on Fox.

Everywhere Mark McGrath goes, people will stop and they will see the Orca.

The Sugar Ray singer and former ‘Extra’ host was the latest celebrity to appear in The Masked Singer, where he performed as the Orca. McGrath sang ‘Every Rose Has Its Thorn’ by Poison for his second and final performance.

“I think it’s perhaps the only contestant in the history of ‘The Masked Singer’ whose costume is much cooler than in real life,” McGrath said of his costume. ‘When I saw the Orca, I thought, oh my god, it’s perfect. I have a headroom. I thought it was going to be energy. It would never be my five-octave vocal series that we know does not exist. I had to get by with a little chutzpa and rock and roll, and good luck, and the Orca costume really lent it to me. ‘

None of the panel members of the program realized that it was McGrath. Robin Thicke and Ken Jeong thought it was Greenie’s Billie Joe Armstrong, Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg guessed that surfers Kelly Slater and Nicole Scherzinger thought it was Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters.

“My head expands in the Orca costume,” he said. ‘All these real-time guesses, all the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame members. My performance was good, but they have a beautiful way of really uplifting ‘The Masked Singer’ and celebrating everyone. Whether you’re Rob Gronkowski or LeAnn Rimes, they’ll make you feel so good about yourself. And that’s a beautiful part of the show. I was blown away to hear these guesses. ”

McGrath was the first “Wildcard” of the program, who was brought into the middle of the competition to perform. He said he did not know.

“The masked singer is very good, as the information is only given on a needs basis,” he said. “I did not know I was coming out as a wildcard. In my mind, a wildcard means that you had a bulog on your back.It gripped me so much when I walked out to do my first rehearsal.But when I got out there and saw the production.It looks like one of the Hollywood productions of the Ziegfeld Follies 1930s “It looked underwater on TV, and they wonderfully eased my Wildcard worries.”

McGrath was ready to sing ‘It’s Tricky’ from Run DMC for his third number when he returns. His first number was We’re Not Gonna Take It, ”by Twisted Sister.

“The thing that attracted me most about ‘The Masked Singer’ was that it scared me,” he said. “It scared me because it’s a singing competition. Now you can think, your career is as a singer / entertainer. [But] no one was ever confused by the voice with Pavarotti or Chris Martin. But being able to be someone else in the mask was, of course, appealing to me.

“What I did not know was what emotional component this show would have for me,” he said. ‘You become part of this mysterious adventure park atmosphere. This is the world of costumes. You breathe life into this thing, into this Orca, and when I last took off the mask, there is no more life, I am essentially this Orca is gone. It was so nice to be a part of it, to fool people when you sing as part of the Orca’s aura and essence. I have a ten year old twin and that was a big part of why I did it. And what a wonderful opportunity in a year that people do not do many things in the music industry. What a ride it was. ”

McGrath said Sugar Ray has resumed performances, including gigs in Orlando and Tampa, and the group’s summer dates are starting to fill up.

“I’m excited to see if anything happens to this ‘Masked Singer,'” he said. “Once you’re part of the Masked Singer, you’re part of the family. They do tours and things like that. I have them let me know that I’m available for anything you need. I’m here for ‘The Masked Singer’. ”

Meanwhile, Nick Cannon was back full-time as host, as he was previously in quarantine for COVID-19. Niecy Nash hosted ‘The Masked Singer’ for the first five episodes of the show, until Cannon was unveiled as the Bulldog last week.

This season’s costumes include Raccoon, Seashell, Black Swan, Snail, Grandpa Monster, Phoenix, Chameleon, Russian Doll (s), Porcupine, The Piglet and the wild cards Orca, Crab and Bulldog. Cannon as the Bulldog joins previously unmasked celebrities Nick Cannon (Bulldog), Logan Paul (Grandpa Monster), Danny Trejo (as Raccoon), Caitlyn Jenner (as Phoenix) and Kermit the Frog (as Snail).

Season 5 contestants have a combined 26 Grammy nominations, nine multi-platinum singles, four Oscars, three Super Bowl appearances, six gold medals and two world records.

The panelists also once competed for a “Golden Ear” trophy, based on their first impressions of each masked artist (which McCarthy last won). Jeong and McCarthy Wahlberg have each had a point so far to go after this episode.

The guesses of McCarthy Wahlberg and Scherzinger were both Dave Grohl, Thicke went with Billie Joe Armstrong, while Jeong was Jon Bon Jovi. None of them picked up a point.
