Less than two years after Washington Dwayne Haskins with the no. 15 in the 2019 NFL draft, the football team has decided to continue with its former QB of the future. As if the decision is not striking enough, the move comes before a must-win game against the Eagles Sunday night Soccer which will determine the winner of the NFC East.
“This afternoon I met Dwayne and told him we were going to release him,” said Washington coach Ron Rivera. said in a statement. ‘I told him I think it benefits both parties that we go separately. We would like to thank Dwayne for his contributions over the past two seasons and wish him well. ”
Haskins’ journey from the first round to the free agent was quick, but his departure from Washington was going on all season. Per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Haskins would be inactive this weekend, and his departure came as a result of an “accumulation of issues” – including violations of the COVID-19 protocol and poor play – that piled up throughout the year. His departure serves as a staggering reminder of how drafting quarterbacks remains one of the most inaccurate aspects of NFL team building, and how organizational direction and stability affect the performance of a quarterback in the league.
Sunday’s loss to the Panthers was a second chance for Haskins. After an early season in which he occasionally exploited his potential, Haskins earned captaincy during the off-season and entered the normal season in 2020 as Washington’s appetizer. But Haskins did not show much improvement during the first quarter. During the first four weeks, Haskins finished 28th among the 34 qualified passengers in the completion rate (61 percent), 32nd in the adjusted completion rate (66.2), 27th in the yards per attempt (6.4) and 33rd in the pass grade. (48.0)), according to Pro Football Focus. Washington won 1-3 in that piece, and Haskins is in Week 5 and degraded to no. 3 on the depth chart behind former unknown free agent Kyle Allen and Alex Smith; At that point in the season, the latter has not played since suffering an injury in 2018.
Prior to Washington’s Week 6 loss to the Giants, Haskins violated COVID-19 protocols by making reservations for a family friend in the team hotel. He was fined $ 4,833, and he remained Washington’s third string QB until then in Week 10. Allen was lost for the season to a gruesome disrupted ankle injury. Haskins backed Smith and handled the role until Week 14, when Smith had a calf pan against the 49ers forcing him to play for two weeks. Haskins started the week 15 loss to the Seahawks during the soccer team, after which he was depicted masklessly at a private party that he said was a celebration for his girlfriend’s birthday. The NFL fined him $ 40,000– the biggest known fine for the offense of a player COVID-19 – and Washington stripped him of his captaincy.
Despite Haskins’ second offense, he started Washington’s game against the Panthers on Sunday. Haskins completed 14 of 28 passes for 154 yards and two picks, except that he lost a ploy and set up a QBR of 4.1 against Carolina. Haskins’ performance was so weak that Washington turned to Taylor Heinicke, a former rugby puppet who was studying for the final college exam when Washington reached out. Heinicke signed with Washington’s practice squad on Dec. 8 and replaced Haskins against Carolina in the fourth quarter. After losing Sunday, Haskins initially did not want to speak to the media during in-game interviews – NFL Protocols Determine start QBs do talk to media after the game Haskins apparently adopted because Heinicke spoke after that, he does not have to. Eventually, the PR in Washington made contact with Haskins, who led a press from his home, and it sounded conspicuous.
“Definitely the hardest week of my life. I just want to jump back and just go forward and pray and get my life together, ”Haskins tell reporters. He later added: ‘You sign up for this job and that’s what it is. Sometimes being human is not enough. Just fulfill your responsibilities and mistakes, and be a better person moving forward, putting your best foot forward and praying for another opportunity. … You never know when you’ll get another one. ‘
Haskins has a similar tone in a statement released after being cut, saying he “accepts full responsibility for not complying with the standards of an NFL QB.”
Haskins’ NFL career is not over yet, though it is not clear he will get another immediate chance to start soon. Haskins is currently forgiving, and any team claiming to be on the hook for $ 68,000 this week alone, in addition to nearly $ 4.3 million guaranteed over the next two years, by Dan Graziano of ESPN. Haskins’ numbers are not flattering – the 23-year-old’s career numbers include an interval of 60.1, an intermediate of 12 to 14 on interception, 6.3 meters per attempt (he has 6.7 meters per attempt dropped to 6 yards per attempt (season), 5.4 adjusted yards per attempt, and only 175.3 runs per game in 16 games (13 careers started).

Yet Haskins does not deserve the blame for his outburst. Washington has long been a dysfunctional franchise, and the team has wasted no time in getting it right into the core of the chaos. Haskins was drafted by former Washington head coach Jay Gruden, and there was murmurs that Gruden and his coaching staff are not interested in choosing Haskins, which Gruden once described as ‘very raw’. Haskins only started for Ohio State in 2018, his sophomore season, and he improved school records for passing yards (4,831) and touchdowns (50). He finishes third in Heisman voting and enters the NFL draft for 2019. As an NFL rookie, Haskins spends much of the year behind Case Keenum and Colt McCoy – a few years-long NFL backup – before starting the work. from week 9 to 16.
“That was the direction we decided to go,” Gruden told ESPN The Dan Le Batard Show last year. ‘There were some other quarterbacks later in the draft that some people liked that building, but we chose Dwayne and tried to make the most of it. He no doubt still has the chance to be an excellent player. ‘
If Haskins really has a chance to be a good player, he’ll have to prove it somewhere other than Washington. Haskins was the third full-back selected in the 2019 class, behind Kyler Murray (Cardinals, No. 1) and Daniel Jones (Giants, No. 6) and ahead of Drew Lock (Broncos, No. 42). He joins a dubious group of former first-round callers who have not lasted more than two years at the clubs they have selected. Since 2000, the group includes Tim Tebow (Broncos, 2010-11), Brandon Weeden (Browns, 2012-13), Johnny Manziel (Browns, 2014-15), Paxton Lynch (Broncos, 2016-17) and Josh Rosen (Cardinals, 2018-19). Haskins will have to brave the chance to return to the NFL as a starting quality.
As far as Rivera and the football team are concerned, the foundation for their rebuilding is still in place and it looks ahead of schedule. Washington is able to score its first playoff game since 2015 with a win over the Eagles on Sunday night. Smith is expected to play, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. Heinicke will be the backup. Who will start behind the center in the future will be a reservation for another day. Now both parties will at least get a fresh start.
