The Last of Us HBO Show: Season 1 is adapting the first game, but will ‘deviate a lot’ in some episodes

The Last of Us on HBO will lift the dialogue directly from the original game, says executive producer Neil Druckmann, but will see that some episodes ‘deviate strongly’ from the events we played before. The Last of Us is the first of several planned PlayStation adaptations in film and television, and with the role of Ellie and Joel, one of the biggest questions remains how now the HBO series will follow the original story. The Last of Us game director and show executive producer, Neil Druckmann, spoke to IGN during SXSW 2021 about his and showrunner Craig Mazin’s approach to adapting the award-winning original game.‘We talked for a long time [that season 1 of the show is going to be [the first game], ”Druckmann explained, noting that“ the philosophical underpinning of the story ”was for him and Mazin the most important thing to get right with the adaptation. ‘As for the superficial things, as they should be [a character] wear the same checkered shirt or the same red shirt? They may appear in it, it is less important to us than getting to the core of who these people are and the core of their journey. And while Druckmann obviously could not divulge too much about the exact plans of the team for how the series will play compared to the game, he did explain that viewers will definitely recognize some dialogue – and will be surprised by great parts of the episodes.

‘Things sometimes stay pretty close. It’s funny to see my dialogue there from the games in HBO scripts. And sometimes it’s much better to deviate because we’re dealing with a different medium, ‘he said.

‘For example, there is so much action in the game to train the player on mechanics. You have to have a certain amount of violence and more spectacle than you would need in a TV show, because you do not have to train people to use a gun. So this is something that was really different, and HBO pushed us well to move away from hardcore action and concentrate more on the drama of the character. Some of my favorite episodes so far have deviated a lot from the story, and I can’t wait for people to see it. ”

But further, Druckmann did not want to spoil the experience of what was to come, but only to say that he “can not wait for people to see what we saw with the people who brought us together,” referring to Pedro Pascal as Joel and Bella Ramsey as Ellie. But he recently saw one of the main threats to the game come to life.

‘I just saw the first prosthetic test for the Clicker and it’s great. “It’s so amazing to see this thing come into physical life,” he said.
