People with small hands has been campaigning for a smaller smartphone for years, and by 2020, Apple finally delivered with the iPhone 12 Mini. Except that it looks like Apple may stop producing its smallest phone due to less than stellar sales.

Supplier analyst William Yang of JP Morgan has reportedly lowered production expectations for the iPhone 12 Mini by 11 million units. AppleInsider report. Yang added that Apple could even stop production by the second quarter of this year. Yang also revised its expectations for the standard iPhone 12 by 9 million units, while the numbers for both the iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max were adjusted by 2 million and 11 million units, respectively. The iPhone 11 also surprisingly got a boost; Yang has adjusted its expectations for the 2019 flagship by 8 million units.

This apparently confirms recent reports that there is not a huge demand for iPhone 12 Mini. Earlier in January, Consumer Intelligence Research Partners launched a report the iPhone 12 Mini sales accounted for only 6% of total iPhone sales in October and November. Granted, the 12 Mini only went on sale in November, but so did the 12 Pro Max, which accounted for about 20% of new iPhone sales during the same period. Another recent Nikkei Asia supply chain report noticed that while the 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max exceeded expectations and the iPhone 12 met them, the 12 Mini was ‘slow’.

There is enough of reasons why it may be. To begin with, there is the iPhone SE. Although the SE is slightly larger than the 12 Mini, it is also on the smaller side for a telephone, and at $ 400, it is also much cheaper than the $ 700 Mini. Another problem is the battery. The small size means that it only a 2227 mAh battery, while the iPhone 12 uses a 2,815 mAh battery and the 12 Pro Max a 3,687 mAh battery. In Gizmodo’s review of the iPhone 12 Mini, the size was right, but the abysmal battery life was definitely our biggest pain point.

The 12 Mini may not sell well, but it does not necessarily spell the eternal doom for fans of more compact iPhones. The iPhone 13 rumors vortex so far strongly suggests that Apple stick to the four-model lineup this year. If the Mini line continues to hold on, Apple’s likely to figure out a way to fold in a larger battery or optimize software so fans of small phones can get the iPhone experience they want. without sacrificing battery life. If you exclude it, there is always the iPhone SE and possible future upgrades on the line. So dspite this news, there is still hope, my tiny friends.
