The Hurry-Up: Luke Montgomery Blown Away By Buckeyes Offer, Ohio State Expands Dual-Sport Offer to Number 1 Overall Prospect for 2023

The Hurry-Up is your nightly dose of updates from the Ohio Soccer Recruitment Track, featuring the latest stakes and targets from across the country.

Montgomery blown away by OSU offer

It finally happened.

Luke Montgomery officially has his chance to become a Buckeye if he so chooses.

Montgomery was ready to take what he expected was just going to be an informal call with the Ohio State staff again, but eventually he got the news that Elf Krygers (and many others) expected it to hit sometime this winter or spring. Greg Studrawa and Kennedy Cook came knocking on the door on Thursday (of course, of course) by extending an offer to the domestic prospect of Findlay High School.

He is now the third prospect in 2023 with an offer in the state of Ohio, joining Mentor’s defensive end Brenan Vernon and Pickerington Central safety Sonny Styles. Michigan, Penn State and Notre Dame highlight some of Montgomery’s other offerings.

We jumped on the phone with Montgomery a few minutes after he tweeted the news and his head – understandably – was still spinning.

‘Pretty bad. Overwhelm. I’m pretty excited, ”Montgomery said. “I did not expect it at all. I’m so lost for words. I have so many things going on now. It was wild.

“It was crazy. It’s such a blessing. I did not expect it at all. I thought it was just going to be another call with Coach Cook. We usually try to talk once or twice every two weeks, just catch up and such. I did not expect it at all. Coach Stud touched the phone and he offered me. I was honestly just so shocked. ”

So … why now? Why did the Buckeyes give the green light? Well, in a twist of fate, this is one case in which the extension of the death period must be thanked.

“(Studrawa) said he wanted to wait until I got on campus and undertook my family,” Montgomery said. “And a few days ago, of course, the period of death extended, and he was like, ‘We offer you now. We really like you, we like your movie. “It’s crazy, it’s such a blessing. ‘

When we first spoke to Montgomery on record this summer, he tells us that the Buckeyes targeted him as an offensive linebacker, but that they also like him as a defensive end / defense hybrid. This is after all how some schools like Michigan State, Notre Dame and Virginia Tech (which each offered) consider the second foot of 6 feet 5, 265 pounds.

But now the Buckeyes have made it clear that they like him on the attacking line, probably on the outside, while Montgomery develops on the side of the ball in his first season there at the line.

“They want to tackle me. I am just moving there for O-line this year, ”said Montgomery. “They like my footwork a lot. I’ve always loved basketball, and I love basketball. It’s still my favorite sport. They just said that your speed and physicality are what they like.

“They just want to see me grow from now on and bring myself to campus. I’m calling Coach Day tomorrow actually to catch up and all that. ”

Ohio State coaches have not really compared Montgomery to any former or current Buckeye attacking lineouts, but Montgomery believes he’s a bit like the three-time NFL Pro Bowl attacking tackle Lane Johnson. To be sure, a high ceiling, so he has to work hard to achieve it.

“I will try my best. Just go keep my head up and grind and just keep working hard. That’s it. That’s all I’m going to do,” Montgomery said.

However, he has already worked hard. In the summer, he told us that he feels stronger physically as well as mentally because he loses fat and gains muscle. He has continued to transform his body over the past few months. Ironically, he has a minor leg injury to thank for that.

“I feel so good. It was really good,” he said. precaution – I got hurt and I’m still technically out – I did not play.I just took the time to lose my weight and buy my body.I’m eating very well since I got hurt.To just as much as “It’s really fruitful. I’m really in love with the weight room.”

So, unlike relaxing the rest of the day after getting his Buckeye offer, he will really be dealing with friends, family and media people like yours when he goes to commit in the state of Ohio. Montgomery laughed and said – similar to Brenan Vernon’s approach, the prospect of 2023 – that he was going to take his time with his decision. He said after the next football season: “I will definitely consider where I am going.”

“I like the state of Ohio,” Montgomery said. ‘Coach Stud, he grew up 20 minutes away from me in Fostoria. I was born in Columbus. I lived there for about a year and I still have family in Columbus. I am very familiar with the area. I go there a lot, and I love the campus, and of course there are great academics too.

‘I see a lot (ways I fit into their transgression). Clearly an All-American like Wyatt Davis and then Nicholas Petit-Frere. Paris Johnson, my family are actually pretty good friends with their family, so I’m going to work with them this summer, I’m sure in Cincinnati and learning only the best.

“It seems like they have only the best offensive and defensive line in college football every year.”

2023 star gets a two-sport offer

Montgomery was not the only player the Buckeyes offered on Thursday.

In a rare move for the state of Ohio, the football and basketball programs expanded a scholarship offer to Lebbeus Overton, Milton (Georgia).

Overton, a 6-foot-4, 245-pounder, is the number one overall player and number 1 defensive finisher in America’s 2023 class. He holds offers from Alabama, Florida, Georgia, LSU and Oklahoma, among others.

He’s the teammate of the 2022 Ohio State basketball team, Bruce Thornton, and it looks like the Buckeyes are going to recruit Overton from both corners.
