CNN has published reports of the federal government dated January 3 warning about the chance of a “US variant” of the coronavirus.

However, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a separate statement on Friday confirming that there is still no evidence to suggest a mutation specifically related to the US.
A CDC spokesman confirmed to reporters that while viruses naturally mutate, it could take scientists months to identify a new COVID-19 strain similar to that seen in other countries.
“Researchers have been monitoring U.S. tribes since the start of the pandemic, including 5,700 specimens collected in November and December,” the CDC spokesman wrote. To date, neither researchers nor CDC analysts have seen the emergence of a particular variant in the United States as seen with the rise of B.1.1.7 in the United Kingdom or B.1.351 in South Africa. “
White House officials have recommended stricter mitigation measures to curb a potentially more transmissible virus. These include the continued use of face masks in public and rapid vaccinations.
“Without the uniform implementation of effective face masking (two or three layers and well-fitting) and strict social distance, epidemics can quickly worsen as these variants become widespread and predominant,” the reports added.
This news comes as the US records its deadliest day and reports 4,000 deaths within one day due to COVID-19.
