The gap between Destiny 2’s trials and the night wound weapons is wide

This week is a big one for high-end loot being chased into Destiny 2.. We saw the launch of Grandmaster Nightfalls, and the surprising reactivation of Trials of Osiris with the massive powerful hand cannon-low-hanging fruit of that mode with 3 wins / failures.

But I have to say that in the initial offering of Ordeal / Grandmaster loot here, if it is meant to be something equivalent to Trials, but on the PvE side I just do not see it.

For trials we have:

Shadow price – A rifle with an archetype in a terrible place.

The swarm – A machine gun that does not differ significantly from most others, and MGs are not exactly what you usually dedicate your heavy lock to PvE for obvious reasons.

The Palindrome – Perhaps the most popular of the bunch, but a sub-archetype in the era of 120s.

But trials? Trial loot is out of control these days. Desperado Messenger. Two-tap clotting hammer. Astral is more or less the only viable primary PvP shotgun that is not under sunset. A sword with chain reaction. A fusion rifle with a completely unique loading advantage. A rocket launcher with heaps of god roll options. A sniper who still has Vorpal. The list goes on and on.

Certain weapons have Bottomless Grief, a new advantage that is the PvE equivalent of Celerity. And since Celerity is rubbish, it’s rubbish too. Beyond that, there is little to make GM booty feel powerful or unique, not even with the skilled versions. The new Big Ones mod is a good start, but it’s best used with … Trial Skills, mostly.

Maybe this is just the beginning. Trial loot did not start everyone the special, I suppose, with Astral really being the only thing anyone cared about for a while. But I was hoping they learned from it for the introduction of GM-skilled loot, and that does not seem to be the case.

Maybe that will change over time, but at the moment I certainly do not see the point in defeating GMs specifically for that loot. And in lower levels that are more bearable, I can even get ‘god roll’ drops like a Feeding Frenzy / One for All Shadow Price, and it can still be bad, given where the type of weapon is, and there is There are no unique benefits to the only new, Bottomless Grief, something you actively want prevent.

If trial booty can develop, I believe it can also be a booty grandmaster booty. But right now, I think the scales are being turned wildly in favor of trials, which is why you see PvE players jumping off cliffs for a hand cannon versus performing Nightfalls this week. I hope this will change in the next few seasons and that this loot will be just as coveted as the trial loot is now.
