Absence can make the heart weaker, and with it Scott Pilgrim vs The World: The Game the wait prompted me to fall in love with his retro-game nostalgia festival all over again. Its return could not have come at a better time either. In my home away from friends and family, while the days are short, cold and in the grip of the ongoing pandemic, the decade-old knock helps me to recharge when I need it most.

Scott Pilgrim vs The World: The Game was originally released in 2010 to coincide with the release of Universal’s adaptation of Bryan Lee O’Malley Scott pilgrim graphic novel series, about a group of 20 slapstickers from Toronto navigating life and relationships through video-inspired hijinks. A joint project by Ubisoft Montreal and Ubisoft Chengdu, offers a Scott pilgrim– turn on the custom ‘RPG-lite classic, River City ransom, enhanced by artist Paul Robertson’s bubbly animation style and chiptune punk band Anamanaguchi’s upbeat soundtrack. The digital version has blown up on PSN and Xbox Live Arcade as a capable licensed game with a deep, indie heart. And then on December 30, 2014, it was removed from both store windows, silently and seemingly disappeared forever and turned into a poster child for the pitfalls of preserving games in a digital age.

Now it’s back on PS4 and Xbox One, along with PC, Switch and Stadia, and just as well as I remember it. Beat ’em ups have had a bit of a revival over the last few years Scott Pilgrim against the world may not recently conform to the new gold standard in the genre Submitted by Strate of Rage 4, it is still a very nice playground to relax in. As the source material, Scott Pilgrim against the world revolves around his titular protagonist who falls in love with a parcel courier named Romona Flowers and in the process fights her seven older boyfriends with paranormal struggle.

Between the cuts and boss fights, Scott Pilgrim against the world deals mainly with fist fights with crowds of random strangers in the streets of Toronto and uses the experience and money earned to increase and unlock new skills. Levels, shaped like a Super Mario Bros. world map, is meant to be replayed, and features stores where you can spend money on food to increase stats like health, strength, and speed. Pay Scott’s late fines of $ 500 in the video rental store and unlock a menu with even more powerful upgrades to buy. Enter a cheat code (Square, Square, Square, X, Circle, Triangle on PS4) and you can start each level with a deadly sword that emits Master Sword-style energy waves.

All in Scott Pilgrim against the world is as before, like returning to your nursery, perfectly preserved in the years since you left, out of negligence as much as anything else. These include the imperfect but workable online multiplayer, which was released earlier than DLC years after the game first came out. At the time it felt like an afterthought, but today it is a sale. Scott Pilgrim against the world is an extraordinarily enjoyable walk across the memory track that plays solo, but with a friend or group it turns into a proper hangout. I’ve been playing with friends and strangers here and there for the past week, and it feels like the unexpected postponement of a snowy day, combined with the free exuberance of a post-barcrawl coop session – two things have mirage-like fantasies by the pandemic.

There are of course many other great multiplayer games to hang out with friends. In fact, more than ever before. But no one beats me the same welcome notes Scott Pilgrim against the world do, a retro tribute that returns with a unique layer of nostalgia. This last year has been a mess, and no matter how much I do not want to brave the next day, it always comes. Scott Pilgrim against the world is just what I needed now to make the previous nights a little longer.
