The former Alabama defender is expected to join Crimson Tide staff

A former Alabama defender will return to Tuscaloosa as a member of the Crimson Tide staff.

Shyheim Carter is expected to join the Alabama staff as a graduate assistant, a source told AL.com.

The former four-star recruiter was the Tide’s starter at Nickel in 2018 and 2019 and ended his career with three interceptions, including two sessions in 2018.

Carter spent time this season in the Atlanta Falcons’ practice squad after initially signing with the New York Jets as an unknown free agent.

“I think he’s the smartest defensive rugby we have,” Xavier McKinney, a former Alabama security company, said of Carter in 2019. “When Shy is out there, I feel much more comfortable, just knowing he knows everything. He knows all the adjustments. So he’s like one of the guys – if I do not know, then I’m like ‘OK, let me see if Shy (knows).’ Or if I’m not sure, then Shy says’ OK, that’s what we’re playing. Then this is what we are going to play. He is a true veterinarian. ”
