The first Broadway theater opens its doors since the Covid-19 pandemic began

Nathan Lane, a three-time Tony Award-winning actor, and Tony Award-winning choreographer Savion Glover performed for frontline workers at the Actors Fund and Broadway Cares / Equity Fights AIDS on Saturday afternoon.

Both artists received standing ovations and paid tribute to the emotional crowd.

The event is the first of ten planned for Broadway over the next ten weeks, “a pilot program designed to create a working model within which Broadway Theaters can finally reopen safely,” said organizer NY PopsUp.

One of the contestants said she smiled so hard behind the mask.

“I think I smiled every second, just feeling like I was in a room with people again and had a shared human experience,” Susan Slotoroff said outside the theater. “My heart was like beating out of my chest, you could feel the excitement and anticipation and just positive energy in the room.”

New York will be packed with outdoor performances during spring and summer

“Broadway is the heartbeat of New York City,” Slotoroff said. He is with Broadway Cares / Equity Fights AIDS, a non-profit organization that raises funds for HIV / Aids-related causes.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has announced that reception halls could reopen on April 2 with 100 attendees indoors, or 150 if all attendees have proof of complete vaccination or a recent negative test result.

All 41 Broadway theaters have been closed since March 12, 2020 due to the pandemic.
