The developers of the unnamed Final Fantasy 7 remake sequel strongly imply that the game will rewrite the story.
The developers of the upcoming Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 2 said the game would exceed the player’s expectations, so fans should not expect a live remake of the parts outside of Midgar. Final Fantasy 7 RemakeThe end of the original story has drastically changed its ending, and it seems that things will remain different going forward.
Instead of fleeing Midgar and promising to hunt Sephiroth, as in the original Final Fantasy VII, the cast of Final Fantasy VII Remake fight the literal manifestations of fate. Once they get rid of that fate, they fight Sephiroth, giving Aerith her first chance to tackle the one who killed her in the original timeline. The timeline is then changed, indicating (but not confirming) that Jessie and Zack are still alive. The ending is not exactly clear on its meaning, and we’ll have to wait a few years before learning more about this new timeline.

The anonymous sequel to Final Fantasy VII Remake is currently under development, but fans have not yet learned any concrete information about its contents. Final Fantasy VII Remake Producer Yoshinori Kitase and co-director Naoki Hamaguchi appear during the CEDEC + KYUSHU 2020 Online show, and they discuss the upcoming sequel at a surprising length and keep specific details under surveillance. Their comments have been translated into English by aitaikimochi on Twitter. According to Kitase, the Final Fantasy VII Remake continued will go beyond what the player expected. The developers say that they want to create a game that meets the expectations of the original fans, but still manages to undermine the expectations and surprise players.
Final Fantasy VII Remake strongly elaborated on the Midgar section of the original game, including the characters from the novels for camera roles. The full extent of the changes only became clear after the controversial end, which led to speculation that the follow-up game would now go in an even drastically different direction. In the original, Cloud’s party travels to the city of Kalm after leaving Midgar; now that the characters are free from the original timeline, however, they can theoretically go on and do what Square Enix wants.
In a way, it has never been a more exciting time to have a Final Fantasy VII fan. There are many players who have complained about the changes to the storyline and how unclear the ending was, and not sure to what extent the plot has changed. However, this only means that they still have a few years to reflect on these changes and speculate on what will happen next while they wait. It’s possible that the game may contain new playable characters and even confirm some longtime fans of the original game, and Aerith may survive this time around with the Whisper Harbinger victory. Players probably won’t know for a while yet, but if Square Enix proves anything with the recent revisit of the classic JRPG, it’s that it might surprise players in Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 2.
