We are officially very busy with what the kids might call ‘Mock Draft Szn’ with the start of the new league year around the corner. While most mockery concepts go for a round or two, one author of The Draft Network projected a full seven-round pick to the Minnesota Vikings. What does it have? Well, I think it’s a pretty accurate reflection of what we’re going to see this April, because it’s heavy on the defensive side of the ball.
Ryan Fowler’s seven-round Vikings spot has the press with their first choice to address the offense with the choice of USC guard Alijah Vera-Tucker. After that, it mostly tries to contribute to the Vikings’ defense, as eight of their eleven other choices go to the defensive side of football.
When I look at the concept of Fowler, the choice that intrigues me the most in the fourth round comes with the choice of the Walford Little attacking Stanford. In the 2019 season, Little was a man talked about as a potential pick in the first round, but suffered a serious knee injury in the first quarter of Stanford’s first season that he missed the rest of the season. Few then excluded the 2020 season due to concerns about COVID-19, meaning it would take about two calendar years since its last game action against the 2021 NFL season.
I’m not entirely sure Little would make the whole fourth round of the draft, but if he did, he would be the kind of guy the Vikings could try to develop into a new protector for Kirk Cousins (or, you know, whoever is here at the quarterback in the near future). There are also some other interesting choices in Fowler’s spot, but the Little choice was the one that really drew me. This is one of the choices that can be pretty spectacular in the end if it works as well as possible.
