A woman who was declared missing when she walked into Yosemite National Park was found dead the same day, but the National Park Service received no public update about it.
Authorities announced the death of 41-year-old “Alice” Yu Xie on Friday.
Yosemite officials released details of the disappearance of the Chinese citizen on January 16 on the National Park Service’s website and social media. Xie was found dead at the foot of Upper Yosemite Fall that day. The cause of death was not immediately disclosed.
There was no immediate explanation from the park service as to why the announcement of her death was delayed by almost a week.
Park officials could not be immediately reached for comment.
The woman’s family was notified; there was no indication that the communication was related to the delay in updating the search status.
Xie travels from Mariposa on January 14 by Yosemite Area Regional Transportation System bus to Yosemite. She was reported in arrears on Jan. 15 “after she planned to hike to the top of Yosemite Falls,” the park said in a Facebook post.
