The China version of Tesla’s latest crossover is now on sale in the Middle Kingdom.

Tesla has been working hard to get its Chinese Model Y production up and running in the massive Gigafactory complex outside Shanghai, and according to a report published by Reuters on Thursday, hard work has paid off.

The Big T started selling the Chinese Y model at a starting price of 339,900 yuan (or $ 52,091.95 at current exchange rates), which is actually only $ 2,191 more than our version of the Model Y Long Range.

Tesla’s pricing strategy for Model Y in the world’s largest car market is simple: take a look at the other guys. Therefore, Model Y will be slightly cheaper than, for example, offers from Nio, which sell for $ 56,329.

Interestingly, although Tesla’s Model 3 gets the benefit of China’s subsidy for electric vehicles, Model Y does not qualify because of its price. It is also not entirely clear whether there are plans to equip the Model Y with the cheaper lithium-iron phosphate battery cells of the base model 3, which in theory will lower the price.

Since Tesla does not have a PR department, I tweeted Elon Musk about this, but I do not hold my breath for response.
