The built-in generators of Ford trucks drive homes in Texas after winter storm power outages

Some pickup truck owners in Texas were able to comfortably eliminate winter storm surges thanks to built-in generators in their vehicles.

Ford’s 2021 F-150 trucks have the “Pro Power Onboard” feature available, which generates 2, 2.4 or 7.2 kilowatts depending on the engine.

Randy Jones was one of the millions of Texans who lost power this week. A resident of Katy in suburban Houston, he ordered a new F-150 in November because he wanted the generator on board, and he just received the truck on February 6th.

“It came in just in time,” he said.

Jones told Fox Business his power went out from late Sunday to Wednesday night. During that time, he drove his F-150’s generator 10-12 hours every day and turned it off at night. He uses it to power his fridge and freezer to prevent food from getting bad, and has also used amenities such as lamps, a coffee pot, toaster and TV.

“It was very handy,” he said.

According to FD, the F-150 models with the lowest electrical power can have enough power to use power tools or portable facilities for a party party. The most powerful model can drive an entire crew running a house or a day at the field park with two electric dirt bikes, an electric grid and a portable air compressor at the same time.

Even Jones’ neighbors could use the generator of his truck. They tried to charge one tablet or phone at a time and put it in their cars.

“When they saw lights burning in my house, they decided to go and see what was going on,” he said.

Jones set out a power strip so entire families in his area could charge their devices.

He is not the only one who used one of the trucks for power during the interruptions after the storm. Ford sent a letter to dealers in Texas this week asking them to lend F-150 trucks to people without power so they can use the generators, Automotive News reports.

“Our Texas communities need all the support they can at present,” the letter reads. “You can make a significant difference in our community by providing assistance during these very difficult times.”

Jones said he was happy to get the truck before the break.

“It saved us a lot of misery and comfort that we would not otherwise have,” he said.
