Brooklyn Center police officer Kim Potter resigned Tuesday, two days after she fatally shot 20-year-old Daunte Wright during a stop. Mayor Mike Elliott received a letter of resignation from Police Chief Tim Gannon on Tuesday.
Elliott said he hopes Potter will rest his resignation, though he says people ultimately want justice.
“We must ensure that justice is done,” he said on Tuesday. “… Daunte Wright deserves it.”
Potter wrote in a two-sentence letter to Elliott, the acting mayor and Gannon, on Tuesday: ‘I loved every minute of being a police officer and serving this community to the best of my ability, but I believe that it is in the best interest of the community, the department and my fellow officers if I resign immediately, ”she wrote
Potter, a Brooklyn Center official for 26 years, was placed on administrative leave after she shot Wright Sunday afternoon. The pressure increased for officials to terminate Potter.
Gannon, who played a portion of the video recorded by the officer’s body at a Monday news conference, said Potter fired her firearm incorrectly instead of her Taser.

In the video, the officer can be heard warning Wright that she will be chasing him and then shouting, “Taser! Taser! Taser!” As she pulls out her real firearm and fires one shot before shouting, “Holy s – t! I have shot him! ”
‘While watching the video and listening to the officer’s instructions, I believe the officer intended to use their Taser, but that he was Mr. “Wright fired a single bullet,” Gannon said Monday. ‘It seems to me, from what I saw in the reaction of the officer and distress immediately afterwards, that it was an accidental dismissal which led to the tragic death of Mr. Wright. ‘
Washington County Attorney Pete Orput, who is reviewing the case, said he expects to make a charge decision Tuesday afternoon. He said the decision would first be announced before he could discuss it with the Wright family.
